Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR TO OUR FAMILY SESSION?

The best way to pull together a wardrobe for your family is to start with one outfit with which to coordinate all other outfits. When you've decided on your outfits, lay them all out to look at them as a whole to be sure that they coordinate well. Read more about how to plan your outfits.

SHOULD WE BRING ITEMS TO OUR FAMILY SESSION?

The goal of my family sessions is to tell your family's story. If there are items that are important to you and that add to the story of who you are individually or as a family, then bring them. If you are looking for a styled session with lots of props, I am not the right photographer for you, but I am happy to refer you to photographers who do wonderfully styled sessions.

WHAT LOCATIONS ARE BEST FOR OUR FAMILY SESSION?

My favorite locations are those places that are special to you; that invite you to interact, explore and forget that I am there. Once I get the portraits out of the way, we have fun. I turn you loose to explore your environment while I capture photographs that are more candid and authentic. Read more about choosing portrait session locations.

Do you do a lot of posing?

Yes and No. My work is not entirely candid. Much of what you see is directed. My goal at every session is to direct you in a way that makes you look natural, happy and comfortable. We start with portraits that are 100% directed, then I turn you loose to have fun while I shoot more freely and candidly.

Do you edit all of the images before we see them?

Yes. Images are enhanced for color, tone and contrast. Once I cull your portrait session, I edit every image individually before it is delivered to you.

Do you do retouching?

Only if requested. I expose my images and use light in a way that conceals most minor skin imperfections. Birthmarks, moles, scars and other permanent imperfections will be retouched if requested but only with the purchase of prints. Major retouching, like slimming of the body, will be outsourced for an additional fee.

How many pictures will I get?

I believe that more doesn’t necessarily mean better. I shoot, cull and edit to create and deliver the very best collection of photographs. I deliver about 40 images for a 45- to 60-minute portrait session and 15 images for a 15- to 20-minute portrait session.

Will you give me any extra unedited images if I want them?

No. I delete unacceptable images as I cull so only the best images will be delivered to you in your gallery.

HOW LONG BEFORE I CAN SEE MY IMAGES?

Because I shoot film, it takes about four weeks for the images from your portrait session to be ready for viewing.

WHY FILM?

Because film is beautiful. And because it produces images with a texture and softness that compliment my style.

WILL I GET THE NEGATIVES INSTEAD OF DIGITAL FILES?

No. The negatives are scanned and turned into digital files so you get the best of both worlds—the beauty of film and the convenience of digital.

DO YOU INCLUDE DIGITAL FILES?

Digital files are not included in the session fee; however, they can be purchased in digital-only collections or when you create your own print collection. Read more about pricing on my pricing page.

What is a print release?

A print release is a contract that allows you to share your images online and to print up to the size specified on the release. This release prohibits the alteration of the images in any way and the sale or submission of images to blogs, magazines or any other publication. Even when you have a print release, I retain the copyrights.

How big can I print my images?

Images can be printed up to the size specified on the release—8x10 if you purchase the small files and up to 30x40 if you purchase the large files.

What products do you offer?

I keep my product offerings simple because I believe you should invest only in quality, heirloom products that will last a lifetime. I only offer books, prints and digital files, and a selection of frames and keepsake boxes to display and store your heirloom prints. See product photos and descriptions in the Product Gallery.

How long before I receive my products?

All orders are placed the day you place your order. Please allow two weeks to receive your products; however, albums take longer to design and produce.

What is the album design process like?

Album design begins once your images are available for viewing. I design the album to tell your story. Once the design is complete, I send it to you for up to two rounds of changes and for final approval. Once approved, I send the layout for printing and binding. The entire process can take several weeks. It is my goal to have to have your album in your hands within three months of your portrait session.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes! Portrait collections may be paid in two payments. Keep in mind that orders are placed the day of your ordering appointment and cannot be canceled. Session fees must be paid in full to reserve your session.

What type of payment do you accept?

I accept all major credit cards and all payments for sessions and products are made online.

HOW DO I BOOK?

When you are ready to book, get in touch. I will send you a link to an invoice and a contract. Pay the invoice and sign the contract and your date is officially booked!
